Temperatures outside are starting to drop, and fall officially begins on September 22. You know what that means…

Winter is coming.

Now is the perfect time to turn on your heater, and make sure that it’s running properly. That way, if you do need to have your home’s heating repaired, you have plenty of time to take care of it before the cold really sets in.

Keep reading for our top tips on keeping your system running right – and getting repairs done if you need them.

Routine Service

One of the most important parts of HVAC and heater maintenance is a professional annual inspection.

While it might seem like a large upfront cost, this vital step can save you tons of money in the long run, catching small issues before they turn into big problems that might require costly repairs. And, it can keep your family safe by eliminating any hazards from your system that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Filters, Coils, and Condensers

Of all the HVAC services you could perform, keeping these three systems in perfect order is the most essential.

Change your filters regularly to keep your home’s air quality high, protect your ductwork, and prevent a potential fire hazard. Clean your coils often to extend the life of your system, and promote energy efficiency, proper airflow, and thorough drainage. And, ensure that your condensate pump is free from debris to prevent a sudden system failure.

Visual Inspection

Before testing your system, give it a close look.

You’ll want to check for dirt, dust, and debris. Plus, any wires or connections that look loose, worn, or damaged. You’ll also want to check for warning signs like pooling water, an off or musty odor, or anything else that could indicate a leak.

If anything looks out of order, do not turn your HVAC on. Instead, call for professional help.

Test Your System

If your system has been recently serviced and appears to be in working order, go ahead and turn it on. If you notice it heating too slowly or quickly, emitting smoke or strange odors, leaking, or doing anything else unexpected, turn the system off and contact a local repair service.

Even if your system seems to be working perfectly, keep a close watch on its performance. The sooner you notice an issue, the quicker you can remedy it – potentially cutting way back on the cost of repairs.
