Though some blower problems require the expertise of an HVAC technician, most need only a flashlight, matches, and two willing hands. When you’re ready to learn how to evaluate and fix your own furnace, read on.
Start with Your Thermostat
For your blower to run, it must receive a signal from your thermostat. Be sure your thermostat is in the “heat” position, and it’s set to at least 5 degrees warmer than the present temperature. If your thermostat contains a battery, try replacing the battery before you move on to the next section.
Also, open the face of the thermostat. Make sure it isn’t clogged with any dust or debris. Finally, double-check the time and date on programmable models to ensure they haven’t accidentally reset.
Before you move on, don’t forget the easiest remedy for most furnace blower problems: the breaker. Check your breaker box to see if any breakers reset. If so, turn them back on and check to see if it affects your thermostat.
When Your Furnace Blower Runs Continuously
A blower that won’t stop running can be as severe an issue as avoiding furnace smells you shouldn’t ignore. Either may lead to an exorbitant energy bill and an unsafe living environment. This is how to fix a furnace blower if it won’t shut off.
Check your limit switch. If the circuit is open, the blower running, and the flame on your furnace is out, you must replace your limit switch. You’ll need to hire an HVAC expert to come and replace it.
Blower Won’t Turn On
Have you been overusing your HVAC during the Coronavirus epidemic, and your blower won’t blow air? One of the easiest types of furnace blower maintenance that you can do yourself is to check your furnace’s inspection window. Look for any debris clogging the system or blinking red lights.
If you find debris, safely remove it. If you find a blinking red light, it’s a sign that you have a problem with one of the following:
- The blower motor
- The thermostat
- The transformer
- The control board
- The capacitor

Check Your Pilot
